What does "TIN Match Only" mean in results?

Last updated: September 15, 2026

Two checks run in parallel when you submit a business search with a TIN:

  • TIN matching sends the name and TIN you entered to the IRS and confirms whether they are associated.

  • Business matching looks for the business in Secretary of State and other registration records to build the business profile.

TIN Match Only means the first check succeeded and the second did not: the IRS confirmed the TIN belongs to the name you entered, but we could not find a matching business registration.

Because there is no business profile, there is no KYB rating, risk rating, or business details for that search, and the result cannot be fully opened in the console the way a matched business can. The TIN result itself is still returned in the API response.

Common causes:

  • The business is a sole proprietor, government entity or otherwise not registered with a Secretary of State. Sole proprietors can obtain an EIN from the IRS without ever registering with a state, and a SSN together with the owner's name would also result in a tin_matched=TRUE from the IRS.

  • The name or address entered does not line up closely enough with the registration on file.

If you believe the business is registered and we should have found it, send us the search ID and we will take a look.
