Why did the TIN match when the business profile returned was a different entity?

These two checks are separate. TIN matching sends the name and TIN you entered to the IRS. Business matching separately looks for that name and address in state registration records. Each returns its own result.

The most common scenario:

  • The IRS confirms the TIN is associated with the name you entered, so the TIN result is a match.

  • In state records, this entity matched to a closely named other entity because there was no exact address or name match.

  • Since state registrations rarely include the TIN, the TIN cannot be used to disambiguate between them.
