Does TIN matching check the business name, or just that the TIN is valid?

Last updated: September 15, 2026

It checks the name. Baselayer is integrated directly with the IRS TIN matching service, and every check submits the business name you entered together with the TIN. The IRS confirms whether that name and TIN are associated in its records.

  • tin_matched = true: the IRS confirms the TIN is on file for the name you submitted.

  • tin_matched = false: the TIN is not associated with that name, or is not a valid TIN.

  • tin_matched = null: the check could not be completed because the IRS service was unavailable.

The TIN must be exactly nine digits; anything else is rejected before the search runs. A nine-digit value that is not a real TIN returns tin_matched false.

tin_match_type tells you whether the TIN that matched is an EIN or an SSN. Sole proprietors often operate under an SSN, so some customers use this to confirm the type of entity they are dealing with.

The check runs against the name you submit, not against the business profile Baselayer matches in state records. Those are two independent results.
