How are registrations across states linked into one business, and why might one be missing?

Last updated: September 15, 2026

Baselayer builds a single business profile from the registrations a company holds across states. The states do not provide this linkage, so it is something we construct.

How linking works. Baselayer has developed its linking algorithm over years of working with SoS registration data. We link each foreign registration to the domestic registration it points to. This is deliberate: many unrelated businesses share a name, so we do not group registrations on name alone and we use multiple data points.

Why a registration might be missing from a profile.

  • The state has not published it yet. New registrations and changes appear after the state releases them, which for most states take at least one day.

  • The foreign registration could not be linked with confidence. This is rare across the database but does happen.

  • The business has more than one domestic registration under the same name in different states, this can happen in cases of redomesticated businesses.

If you find a registration on a state website that is missing from the profile, send us the business ID, the state, and the filing number. We will correct the linkage, and that feedback improves the data for everyone.
