Why am I getting OIG hits, and how should I handle watchlist false positives?
Last updated: September 26, 2026
The OIG list is the HHS Office of Inspector General’s List of Excluded Individuals and Entities: people and businesses barred from participating in Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal healthcare programs. It is large, it is mostly individuals, and it is matched on name like every other list, so common names produce hits.
Two things about OIG hits are intentional:
We screen officers as well as the business, so an OIG hit is often on a person we found in state records rather than on the business itself. Compare the list entry against the officer names to see which one matched.
We surface OIG hits regardless of whether the excluded party’s state matches the business’s state. Excluded providers frequently re-register in a new state to keep practicing, so a state mismatch is not treated as a reason to suppress the hit.
How to handle watchlist false positives in general:
Tune or disable the list. If your customers are not in healthcare, OIG hits are rarely decision-relevant. From the Settings tab on your profile page in the console you can raise the OIG match threshold so only very close names surface, or disable OIG screening altogether.
Check the entry details. The hit includes the matched entry’s name, aliases, and where available addresses, dates, and a link to the source list. A different middle name, a different state, or a date that rules out the person is usually enough to clear it.
